The Tanabata is celebrated as one of the annual summer events in Japan. The history goes back to the Nara era when more than hundred poems in the "Man' yoshu" (the earliest extant anthology of Japanese verse) were related to theme of Tanabata. Nowadays, festivals that follow the lunar calendar such as the Tanabata Festivals held in Sendai and Hiratsuka are famous nationwide.
